Rory McIlroy: Open Champion 2014

A look back at McIlroy's major victory at Royal Liverpool

McIlroy's dominant display at Hoylake

Rory McIlroy produced a dominant display to win the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, his third major title and his first Claret Jug. The Northern Irishman led from start to finish, shooting rounds of 66, 66, 68 and 71 to finish on 16 under par, two shots ahead of Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler.

McIlroy's victory was his first in a major since the 2012 US PGA Championship and it ended a run of four consecutive top-10 finishes in the Open Championship. He had come close to winning at Muirfield in 2013 but finished third, and he had also finished fourth at Royal St George's in 2011 and tied for eighth at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2012.

McIlroy's victory at Hoylake was a timely reminder of his immense talent. He had struggled for form in the months leading up to the Open, but he found his best form when it mattered most. He was in control of his game from tee to green, and he putted superbly all week.

McIlroy's victory was a popular one. He is one of the most popular golfers in the world, and his success at Hoylake was a fitting reward for his hard work and dedication.
