What is Mpox?
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus.
Symptoms include fever, an extensive characteristic rash, and swollen lymph nodes.

Global Outbreak and WHO Response
In May 2022, cases of mpox began to emerge outside of Africa, where the disease is endemic.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on July 23, 2022, due to the rising number of cases and the potential for further spread.
As of August 2022, over 3,000 cases have been reported in over 90 countries.
