Swimmer Kate Douglass Takes Gold at World Championships

UVA Alum Earns Historic Win

Former University of Virginia swimmer Kate Douglass has won a gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the World Championships in Nanterre, France. Douglass's victory marks the first time a UVA swimmer has ever won a gold medal at worlds.

Douglass, a 2023 graduate who majored in statistics, was a two-time Honda Award winner for swimming and a two-time ACC champion while at UVA. She also set school records in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard butterfly.

In the lead-up to the World Championships, Douglass said her race strategy was to "stick to the plan, stay calm, and count strokes." She executed her plan perfectly, finishing in a time of 2:23.04, nearly a second ahead of the silver medalist.

Douglass's victory is a major accomplishment for USA Swimming and for the University of Virginia. It is also a testament to the hard work and dedication of Douglass, who has been training tirelessly for this moment.
