Suni Lee's Kidney Disease: Olympian Faces Rare Condition Ahead of 2024 Paris Games
Suni Lee's Battle with Kidney Disease
Olympic gymnast and gold medalist Suni Lee has revealed that she battles an incurable kidney disease. In an interview with SELF magazine, Lee discussed her diagnosis, recovery, and how it has impacted her life and career.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Lee experienced symptoms such as fatigue, swelling in her legs, and difficulty concentrating. After numerous tests, she was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a rare kidney disease that causes scarring of the kidneys. FSGS is often progressive and can lead to kidney failure.
Treatment and Recovery
Treatment for FSGS typically involves medications to slow disease progression and manage symptoms. Lee underwent a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and is currently taking medication. She has also made lifestyle changes such as reducing protein and sodium intake to protect her kidneys.
Outlook and Paris Games
Lee's doctors have informed her that her kidney disease is incurable, but manageable. She remains hopeful and is targeting the 2024 Paris Games. However, she acknowledges that her health must come first and is prepared to adjust her training and competition schedule as needed.
